Safety Concerns for Jaw Crusher

Jaw crushers are one of the most important crushing equipments that are used in many industries including the construction industries. Jaw crushers are heavy duty machines and hence they must be operated and maintained very carefully as a slight mistake can lead to a severe injury and major accident. Hence, some considerations must be taken while their operation.  Some of the most important instructions are discussed below.
While feeding jaw crusher, you must be very careful. If you mistakenly enter your hand, leg or any other body part in the crusher in can be broken very easily. Jaw crusher applies massive force to fracture stones; if your body part comes inside it, it can be broken very easily in no time. One of the most vital thing and the most dangerous possible condition is that if you slip in front of the crusher mouth then you may think of what may happen to you.
If you regularly keep your machines maintained then it is not for you, otherwise you should be very careful. If you hear the sounds from your jaw crusher, which are supposed to come from a jaw crusher that is about to jam then you must not use it any further without maintenance and should immediately stop your working, shut it down and run maintenance procedure and check if its moving parts are dry then you should lubricate them before starting them and continue working.
In the end, I would also recommend to use proper safety equipments while working on jaw crushers.

Accident of Cranes – Part 3

Safety and Health Administration, abbreviated as OSHA is the prime body responsible for imposing these regulations and for helping to provide the safety to all workers. They provide a large number of documents, which contain guidelines for a broad spectrum of cranes’ types. These guidelines should be followed irrespective of the type of the crane ant the location where it is being used. A few of the examples of their regulations include the guidelines for: overhead cranes, basic cranes and derricks, truck cranes, gantry cranes and the crawler locomotive cranes.
A reason cargo cranes are subjected to a lot of more regulations and more prone to accidents is because of their location. In most of the cases, they endure many different, good and bad, weather conditions and usually are left in open. Saltwater from the waters takes a large exaction on these machines and can be very rough on the parts that are moving. Couple it with the sand damage and then the cranes can easily become vulnerable. Specifically, this is the reason why it is necessary to inspect and test these machines quite frequently and why it is necessary to verify safety. OSHA provides with many different documents, which outline inspection process.
Even after taking all these safety measures, hundreds and thousands of people are regularly being injured while using them each year. Although, these machines are quite handy and necessary they are also very dangerous. Sometimes accidents are due to leniency in frequent inspections or negligence of the employer while the other times it is because of a careless error or poor training. In any case, the outcome can be devastating.
After knowing all these facts, you should be very careful about these machines and should follow the guidelines set by Safety and Health Administration, in order to save yourself and others from accident.

Accident of Cranes – Part 2

There are various types of cranes available in the market today such as mobile cranes, construction cranes, truck cranes, man-lifts, cherry pickers, tower cranes, bucket trucks, and railroad yard cranes. Due to the variety of cranes available, many different kinds of accidents can occur depending on the type of crane. If you, your colleague, your employee or someone else has been injured in a crane accident in any way, it is the best to contact personal injury attorney for first aid. These professional may help you sorting out all the details of your case and usually they work on the contingency basis that means you have everything to gain without losing anything at all.
It is important to note that there are not just traditional land cranes that are commonly seen on the construction sites, but also are many other types of cranes. One of the industries that use cranes and are seeing higher than average number of accidents by cranes is maritime cargo transportation industry. On the docks of the major shipyards, these cranes can be easily seen and spotted. They are also called vessel cranes or cargo cranes, these machines are as dangerous as land based cranes.
To reduce the number of accidents by cranes, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which is a body or a society, has established guidelines for the workplace safety and the health programs for shipyard industry. The guidelines by OSHA state the information and tips for working around and working with cranes. Complete list of guidelines can be easily found in handbooks written by OSHA under the section “Hoisting and Hauling Equipment”. Some of those regulations that are set forth by these guidelines are:

  • People working around cranes must not enter the area, which is in the range of the swing radius of the crane.
  • All of the cranes and other derricks, which are used regularly on both dry docks and vessels must be routinely certified and must be tested by the trained certified crane inspectors.
  • All of the moving parts of the cranes must be properly covered with the guards.

Accidents of Cranes – Part 1

The number of accidents by cranes has increased in the last several years, which results in serious injuries and deaths. They have occurred due to collapses, tipping, falls, overloading, operator errors, mechanical failures, falling equipments, dropping of loads from the improper ringing, operating in harsh weather conditions like high winds, general negligence, lack of inspection of cranes, electrocution due to the contact of high voltage wire, injuries while taking down or setting up the crane, lack of operator training and defects in crane design.
Although the number of accidents by cranes has increased they do not occur too often on construction sites. This can be easily understood by imagining the total number of construction sites would be so high that it is impossible to calculate it, from that large number even hundred accidents per month (which is only an arbitrary number) is said to be negligible. Hence, they are rare on most construction sites. However, when they happen, serious injuries or even deaths can result. Since cranes are heavy machines and are designed to lift heavy load and lift them high in the air, when an accident is caused there (such as collapse, dropped load, tip-over, or other accidents of similar nature), the force of gravity raises the severity of injuries.
Because of high risk of the crane operation, more companies are now investing in crane accident education programs. If you give the controls of your crane to an operator with inadequate training, It can put almost everyone within the danger zone of a particular piece of the machine in danger. Even a single reckless or careless mistake can kill or injure a very large number of people. The crane education programs are solely designed to teach the operators how to set them up properly, the danger involved with their operation, and how to assure proper rigging.
No matter how much specialized trainings and education is provided to operators, accidents will still happen by cranes, and when they do happen, negligent parties should be held accountable.

Why Tower Cranes Are So Important

If you have ever seen construction site, you would definitely have seen machines that looks from distance something like dinosaurs, these machines are tower cranes. Tower cranes are tall machines used to lift heavy objects. Although, mobile cranes are also available they are useless in the construction of tall buildings. Tower cranes are something, which cannot be ignored in the construction of tall buildings especially in the construction of skyscrapers. Skyscrapers are very tall buildings, like trade towers, Makah tower, Burj Khalifa, etc.
It is impossible to lift heavy objects so high without the use of tower cranes and hence the construction of skyscrapers is impossible without these machines. When tower cranes were not invented or at least when they were not common, buildings were not as high as they are today. There used to be maximum two to three floors. But today with the help of these machines, the construction of buildings with hundreds of floors is possible. The number of floors in Burj Khalifa is 163, which is tallest skyscraper today. But with the help of tower cranes along with other numerous machines, taller buildings are also in construction.
It is very difficult to lift even the light objects to the height of 346 meter, which is the height of an average height skyscrapers, the height of taller skyscrapers like burj Khalifa and Makah towers can goes to five or six hundreds of meters. Skyscrapers are the very advance building structure; even the normal tall buildings of six, ten or more floors like typical apartment buildings or office buildings cannot be constructed without these machines.
Hence, Tower cranes are not only required to construct very tall buildings but are also one of the most essential equipments for the construction of apartments and office buildings.
